Trying Hyped Up Makeup Products

I’ve got some cult favourite products sitting in my makeup drawers unused because I’m trying to finish off what’s already opened. However, I really wanted to try them out, some for the first ever time, to see if they really did live up to their hype. I thought it would be a great chance for you guys to see if those “typical must haves” are all that they claim and could potentially save you wasting your money.

Current mood: extremely agitated

[This post has been an absolute nightmare to put together and edit everything. From my keyboard picking and choosing what letters will work, to me having to retake my photos. I was ready to give up and continue this tomorrow instead. However, I worked through it and managed to finally finish this post for Monday. A lot of sweat went into this so I hope you enjoy it. ]

Too Faced Hangover Primer

I got the mini size of the Too Faced Hangover Primer in a gift set which I was so pleased about as I’ve heard many great things about this. It smells delicious and provided a nice tacky base for the rest of my makeup.

L’Oreal Paradise Mascara

This was one of the products I was most excited to try out. As you may know from previous posts I love mascaras (you can see my collection here). It’s always fun trying a new one out and I’ve not heard anyone complain about the L’Oreal Paradise Mascara.

The pictures will speak for themselves. This was an uhhh-mazingg mascara! Without any lash primer they instantly coated my lashes evenly and gave me a beautifully fluttery effect. I rarely am happy with just one coat but with this I’d be happy to walk around with only one layer.

Kat Von D Ink Liner

If you ask anyone what their top 3 favourite Kat Von D products, the majority would say her eyeliners. They have such a great reputation for giving you a flawless wing. I really wanted to see what all the fuss was about and got an Ink Liner in Trooper.

Do you see how patchy it is on my eyelid here? I had to go over the line multiple times for it to come up like this. I’m very disappointed. The pigment just isn’t there and I like my eyeliners pitch black. I will say one good thing about it is, the applicator made it easy to keep the lines straight.

Alternatives I recommend: NYX Liquid Liner & MAC Liquid Last Liner

Benefit Goof Proof Pencil & Benefit Gimme Brow Gel

It’s no secret Benefit really made eyebrows a centerpiece in makeup terms. They brought out a whole heap of brow products that shook the beauty world. The two I’m going to be trying is the Goof Proof Pencil and the Gimme Brow. I’ve already used these products before but here’s a before and after.

I like my eyebrows to look natural so I only like to fill in the gaps and tidy them up a bit. The Goof Proof Pencil allowed me to draw in little hair like strokes and give my brows a more polished look. I do wish it was slightly thinner however. I really rate the Gimme Brow as the wand was small enough to not overdraw the eyebrows and the gel made sure my eyebrows stayed in place all day.

Stila Magnificent Metals Liquid Eyeshadows

These liquid eyeshadows from Stila are absolutely stunning, from the packaging to the rose gold glitter inside. I picked up a set of 3 from Sephora and today I’m going to be wearing Smoldering Satin.

Long story short, I am in love! It’s so shimmery and pigmented. I adore the way the shadow beams when the light catches it. They are a little bit pricey which is their only downfall. I’d recommend getting them in a gift set so you can get more value for money.

Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define Concealer

When this concealer first hit stores, there wasn’t a beauty blogger that hadn’t reviewed this. It was suppose to be a dupe for the much loved (and much more expensive) Tape Shape by Tarte. I had to try it for myself, which I did when my shade eventually came in stock.

If you can ignore the changes in lighting, you can see the concealer effectively covered up red areas on my face. Around my nose, top of my cheeks and my chin can be tough to hide the redness. It also did a fine job of brightening my under eye area.

Kat Von D Lock It Setting Powder

I can be a sweaty, oily mess at times (thank you heatwave). My forehead can almost look reflective so I really wanted a product that would tone down the shine on my face. The Lock It Setting Powder from Kat Von D has been a firm favourite of the masses for a while and I wanted to try it out for myself so I picked up the mini version.

As it’s something I’m so conscious of, I think I definitely notice the changes more than others but I really saw a difference in how shiny my face looked. It also gave my skin an almost airbrushed finish, which I’m definitely not complaining about!

Benefit Hoola Bronzer

Another cult favourite from Benefit is their Hoola Bronzer. I’ve heard so many beauty gurus claim it to be their go-to bronzer and how cool tone it was. I was getting FOMO and had to see for myself.

I did like how the bronzer looked on my face. It gave me a natural looking tanned face and create a subtle contour on my cheekbones and nose. I wasn’t blown away by it just because I’ve tried other great bronzers alike.

Hourglass Vanish Flash Highlighting Stick

Hourglass is a brand that I would always admire from a far. I heard their products are beautiful but they come with a hefty price tag so I was pleased when I got a mini highlighting stick in a gift set.

I got Champagne Flash which gives off a light golden shimmer. It was really creamy and easy to blend. The highlighter is lovely but you can get others for a lot less so I wouldn’t purchase this again.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray

A lot of beauty lovers swear by this setting spray. I have tried it before but decided to give it another go for the sake of this post. Just as before, I didn’t enjoy using this. The spray didn’t come out straight and it had a strange smell too. My makeup did stay in place though but I wouldn’t buy it again.

Alternatives I recommend: MAC Prep & Prime Fix + Spray & E.L.F. Fixing Mist Setting Spray

Those were my take on some of the most hyped up makeup products. I really enjoyed this post as I got to discover some new products that I loved but it took such a long time to put together. I hope it was somewhat helpful for anyone thinking of purchasing any of these products. Let me know if you’ve tried any of these and what you thought of them. Thanks for reading XOXO.

Good post! I really wanted to hear about the urban decay setting spray and I’m happy I’ve not wasted my money on it. Anna xx (one half of the Cinnamon Buns and Roses blog)

That’s too bad that the Ink Liner didn’t work for you! I’ve been using it for years and it’s usually my liner of choice, as it is always very black for me! Did you prime and powder your lids? I find that the pigment isn’t quite as good if you are putting in straight onto the skin because of whatever natural oils are there, regardless of whether your lids are oily or dry. Regardless, makeup works different for different people 🙂

I LOVE those Hourglass highlighters, so I’m glad you did too! Covet that sample girl!

I also do not like the All Nighter Setting Spray! I just find it makes my skin look weird, and it makes my nose shiny! Which is very strange.

I’m going to keep persisting with the liner and try primer aswell but I don’t have high hopes as I’ve used it multiple times and it felt like it was dragging on my lids. Maybe I just got a bad one?

I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t like the Urban Decay spray because everyone else I’ve seen loves it! 😊

Your eyes look lovely! And I really love Revolution Concealer 🙂

Great post and some amazing products here! Such a shame that the Kat Von D liner didn’t work for you as when I picked up the full sized version it was so pigmented! x
